As my avatar suggests, I spend much of my waking hours with headphones in my ears. Okay, so I'm not listening to my mp3 player in the office or anything (just internet radio--rock on, WMMR!), but the walk to and the walk from work account for about two hours of my day, with my headphones firmly in place during pretty much the entire time. With the right music, I actually get into something of a zone--I've had students of mine have to practically flail their arms in my face to get my attention on the street. It really is a wonderful little gadget, one that I can't imagine living without. It puts me in a decent mood as I head off to work in the morning, it provides the soundtrack to my walk home (which is critical, as I have to trudge straight up a hill for half an hour), it provides a means by which I can brush up on my foreign language skills, and it (sometimes) keeps weird conversationalists at bay on public transportation.
Imagine my horror, then, when I heard it skip for the first time. And the second time. And then it paused randomly during songs. And THEN it would pause for, like, minutes on end in the middle of songs. This was not cool. Panic set in, then frustration, and finally resignation. I tried to reset it, I reloaded the software, and while it worked again for another hour or so, it eventually conked out again. I'd rather just turn the bloody thing off than listen to blips and bleeps of one three-minute song over the course of twenty minutes.
So turn it off I did. And... wow! There's a whole world out there! I heard bird calls that I hadn't heard before. I heard squirrel chatter and Secret Service agent chatter outside the Naval Observatory. I heard radios in cars paused at red lights on Massachusetts Ave. I focused on things that I hadn't really focused on before, such as flowers and leaves and the architechture of the homes that I walked past.
It's been a week now since I put away the headphones. I have to say: the novelty has worn off. Sure, when I'm hiking or rollerblading, I absolutely don't want anything to encumber me or compromise my ability to react to, say, a bloodthirsty, rabid deer chasing me down the trail, so the player stays at home. That, and I really enjoy getting lost in my thoughts when engaged in such activities. It's therapeutic. But I quickly discovered that the tedium of my job requires some sort of pick-me-up first thing in the morning to get me there. Music is easier and far more pleasurable than a cattle prod, hence the mp3 player.
I'm counting the days until the new one arrives from Amazon. Oh, and the hunt for a new job is already underway.

Birds make noise? Maybe I should shut off my electronics too!
And funky noises at that! This were no ordinary sparrow, my friend. This was some random, never-before-heard-in-DC-by-me bird that was just waiting for me to turn off the music so it could blow my mind.
Hi there. I found your blog because the URL was written on a men's room wall. The Addled Writer had absolutely nothing to do with it. Nope. Not a thing.
That being said, what sort of MP3 player was it that broke?
It was likely Homeland Security monitoring you. Beware!
The above commenter does know a little something about mp3 players, so feel free to answer his query.
It was a Creative Zen Touch, 30GB. For some reason, it's working again today, but it's betrayed me before, and I don't trust the sucker as far as I can throw it. (Mind you, it's small and solid, so it's not that tough to get some yardage out of a toss, but still.)
Could the fact that I've dropped it on the treadmill and the ground about 10,000 times have anything to do with it?
Yes, dropping it like that a plethora of times could be a factor in its inability to play. It could be rebelling from harsh treatment from its cruel mistress. Still, it is probably lasting better than an iPod under similar conditions.

Oh, yes indeed. I used to have an iPod--a 3rd generation piece o' garbage, it was. By the time I couldn't take it anymore, I was getting about 30 minutes' worth of play out of the battery, Apple hadn't sent me my $50 rebate, and I was at my wits' end. I finally told them all to bite me and bought the aforementioned Creative Zen, which has annoyed me in different ways, but not enough to keep me from plunking down cash on a Zen Vision M. It's all shiny black and pretty!
Interesting. All my MP3s are on my phone, which is also my MP3 player. It's only a gig of memory but it's enough for me for both songs and TV shows.

But then what do you do when you want to hear songs from deep in the Brad Archives, songs such as "Afternoon Delight" or "Brandy"? These aren't necessarily songs that would be in regular rotation, but sometimes you need a little Starland Vocal Band, you know?
Or do those songs only exist in the PSK Archives?
ok, i'm probably going to come across as an enormous asshole, but that has never stopped me before, so:
when I bought my ipod mini, i got the extended warrenty with it. i have never sprung for such a thing ever, but then i've never plunked down $200 to listen to music, either. said ipod died a year or so into its life; i called up apple and told them so and they sent me a new one. i literally had to go - i don't know - four days without tunes.
look,it was purely a stroke of luck that i paid for the warrenty - i don't normally do that sort of thing. but i think that mp3 players simply break all the fucking time, so this might be a rare example where purchasing such a thing is cheaper in the long run. i dunno. just thought i'd toss that in as an idea. i know if you buy a tv, it's stupid to get the extended warrenty, but in this case i think it's different.
and yeesh, this comment is too long. and "warrenty" might spelled with an "a." i have no idea.
Those songs aren't in the Brad archives, although maybe they should be. My taste in music is a little more eclectic. However, I'm always open to new recommendations.

Amy, Apple sent you a new one? I haven't heard an iPod success story like that. Way to go!
"Brandy" is a great song.
As for the Brad archives, his taste tends toward the Weird Al, but I have a suspicion that he likes They Might Be Giants!
Boy, this blog is hoppin'.
You got that right, sister! And, yeah, I'm all weird about buying extended warranties for anything, so there you go. I'm a loner, Amy. A daredevil. Besides, the new one has FM radio and a voice recorder dealie and everything!
I can still eke some music out of it, but it took about 15 minutes to play "Unknown Legend" by Neil Young today. Bastard. (The mp3 player, not Neil Young. He's a badass.)
Oh, and Weird Al? "White and Nerdy" is just about the best video ever made. It makes "Thriller" look like a pile of puke.
Weird Al is da bomb. He's touring right now. I'll bet the Addled Writer will be there right alongside me at a concert.

Gah! I totally flubbed the line from "Pee Wee's Big Adventure"!! Alas.
